Why Mehta eye surgery & Laser centre for Cataract Surgery?
No Injections - No Stitches - No patches
For cataract surgery we have the state-of-the-art swiss made leica microscope and latest phacoemulsification machine for getting the best results even in the hardest of cataracts. Availability of wide range of intraocular lenses such as foldable monofocal aspheric, toric, multifocal and EDOF IOL which makes it possible to provide the best visual results for patients of all ages.
Cataract surgery has evolved tremendously in the recent years thanks to advancement in technology and surgical techniques. Cataract surgery has become most successful, sophisticated and safe surgery. Cataract surgery has become a day care procedure meaning it takes just few minutes for the surgery and there is no need for injection, stitches or admission. Patients walk home on their own and most people can resume their daily activities from very next day. MEHTA EYE SURGERY AND LASER CENTRE is known for excellence in cataract surgery with thousands of happy patients regaining crystal clear vision post operatively.
What is Cataract?
The function of normal crystalline lens is to transmit and focus light on the retina (the nerve/sensory layer of eye). When any opacity develops in the lens it is called cataract. This doesn’t allow enough light to enter the eye and the vision is obscured. It is like window glass which becomes opaque.

When to get operated?
DO NOT WAIT FOR THE CATARACT TO MATURE (paki javu). Unnecessary delay in surgery makes the surgery more difficult and chances of complications increases.
Cataract is best operated when there is blurring of vision which hampers routine activity of the patient.
Season has no impact on the outcome of surgery and a cataract surgery performed in summer yields same results as in winter.
About Cataract Surgery
There are several surgical techniques for cataract removal. Cataract surgery through phacoemulsification is the most modern and advanced method for performing cataract surgery The operating surgeon is the best person to decide which technique is likely to yield the best result.
Phacoemulsification through a small incision is the most advanced method and allows safe and predictable surgery. A small instrument called the phaco probe is introduced within the eye. Ultrasonic vibrations generated within the probe break the cataract into multiple small pieces (emulsification), which are then removed using a suction device through the same probe. After removing the cataract, a foldable intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted in the eye through this small incision.
Advantages of Topical Phacoemulsification
Types of Intraocular Lenses
Mono-focal IOL: The commonest type of lens used worldwide is monofocal lens which allows to focus light at one specific point. The patient is then required to wear glasses post operatively for near and/or distance.
Toric IOL: This is designed for patients with high astigmatism(degree valo number). Helps reduce spectacle dependency.
Multifocal IOL: This lens is designed to tackle power for near as well as distance reducing the need for spectacles for most of the time. It can have additional toric design too for correcting astigmatism.
EDOF (extended depth of focus IOL): This lens is designed to have additional depth of focus helping with intermediate distance vision. This too can have additional toric design for astigmatism.
Posterior Capsular Opacification (P.C.O.) - also known as 'Chari'
During cataract surgery, the capsule of the lens is left intact to hold the IOL in place. In the long term, this capsule can thicken and cause blurring of vision. This is called posterior capsule opacification (Chhari). The onset of this thickening varies from person to person. It may occur earlier in young individuals, though the incidence is significantly reduced. This opacification can be removed successfully with YAG laser.
